The clouds above tumbled and roared, light blues mixing with various shades of grey. The thunder raging as it moves across the land.
“Hurry and get dressed, Pete, we should get moving.” his tall silhouette leaned up against the creaking door frame, only outlined by the faint lightning strikes. His muscles flexing as he looks out the broken door, his black denim jeans barely visible do to the storm covering them; His afro catching the raindrops, managing to get slipped through the roof of the old ruin home. “I’m glad the change last night went fine.” Pete says, his eyes glow a bright yellow, his pulls his facial expression inward, hunching his eyebrows as he looks at Calvin “you…. gonna but on a shirt?” Calvin just shrugs at it, he pulls a cigarette out of his pocket, puts it to his lips and lights it. “That’s not really my first thought, you know? We need to get home before pops wakes up and finds out we went shifting without him”.
Pete stands, putting on his grandfather’s old leather jacket. He lifts his hands to pat his head as he feels the water dripping onto his cornrows, “oh no!” he shouts looking around for his hat, he runs around lifting the old abandon furniture before finding it kind of smushed under the sofa leg. He puts up the sofa effortlessly, grabs his hat before dropping the sofa. He jumps at the loud thud, “sorry” he says looking at Calvin nervously, he cuts Pete as sharp eye while puffing away before turning his attention back to the old muddy dirt road in front of them. As Pete continues to dust of his hat and placing it on his head, a loud thunder sound followed by crackling as the rain gets heavier and a single clap brings a string of lightning with it. Lighting up the old house for a moment “Hey Calvin?” He says softly, “Yeah?” He says disinterested as he continues looking forward “What are these symbols? They look vampiric.” This question peaks Calvins attention enough for him to pull away and go to Pete, his eyes light up a familiar yellow but Calvins was darker in hue as a bit orange.
Looking over the symbol, Calvin sniffs it thinking it likely to be paint. He pulls back, almost instantly “We need to leave…” Calvin gets ready to say something else when he hears two things happening simultaneously, the sound of a car approaching could not be more than a mile or less than that out and the sound of a large metal object dropping below them. Calvin puts his fingers to his lips before he spoke again, nodding to his brother to walk quietly and move quickly. Making their way around the house, they find the back door in the kitchen. Inching over, lights pass by over head now sitting still at the window. The two brothers did not waste the time asking who but moving to door and getting out of the house, they wait at the edge for the lights on the car to turn off.
The door swings open and a long, hairless legs pop out, her high heels firm in the dirt as she gets out of the car she is in a long dark purple dress, with long vintage gloves to match. She looked around before addressing whoever was on the other side of the car “this heap of shit is what you purchased?” she scream before slamming the door” claim down” the other voice says “Just take a look inside, it’s not like we don’t have the money to fix it up.”, Calvin looks back at Pete and mouths the words vampires, the two move into the house zipping around as the brothers make a run for it. They sprint off to the closest trees with Pete barely making cover as the two vampires make their way out back, “It’s not a bad piece of property, I’ll admit but it does wreak.” She says, Pete been to shift when Calvin holds his arm steady to keep him from moving, with the rain beginning to pick up again but this time it comes in an instant, the down pour of rain causes the vampires to rush back into the house, “move.” He says stern but low as the bolt into the trees, while they continue to full sprint through the woods the house becoming less visible as they go on. “That was close.” Pete says trying to break the silence around them “remember what father says, don’t play around vamp territory” Calvin replies while looking forward, “Odd is it not? Why are V’s in Wolve domain?” “I don’t know and don’t care, we just need to get away from them.”
A little while later, the make it back into familiar grounds, their family’s forest. They could always tell when they were close to home, the soil was different from anything else around. Generations of untamed land and undisturbed foliage, insects lived more freely while predators like foxes and coyotes could hunt more carelessly. The large trees spanned for miles, planted generations ago, but what mainly set this area of the forest apart from the others was the way it was structures during full moon cycles.
Calvin stops short of the backyard to their house, when they hear a set of tires coming from down the single driveway path. “Is that?” “it cannot be” Calvin cuts Pete short before they brush themselves off and continue walking home, pushing open the back door they are greeted by their mother. “And just where have you two been?” she says looking at Calvin, his eyes do not dart but stay steady as he gives his mother eye contact “Nothing major, just out running. Trying to see what is beyond the territory”, their mother pauses for a moment “you know, your father will not like that. Not one bit and you have been told…” Calvin jumps in “yes, but…”, “no buts Cal” she stops short and takes a deep breath, wiping the sweat from her forehead as she continues to cook over the stove “Well tell me what did you find?” She continues her voice calm and sweet. Both brothers sitting at the kitchen table, heads down as they listen to the lecture. Her question comes as no shock to them. Their conversation comes to a pause, a light silence falls over the room as the hear the wood from the front steps bend under the weight of their father.
His presence was overwhelming and strong even before he entered the house, the door knob wiggles a bit before turning and swings open. “Family!” he shouts as he enters his heavy boots hit the ground as he steps in. His boots were covered in a layer of mud, while his pants and trench were soaked, as he begins to take off his things and place them in the closet. “Whoa, was not expecting…” his head turns to the kitchen he notices the kids were sitting at the kitchen table, “what is this?” he says walking into the door frame, leaning against it. “Well Matthew, I was just talking to Calvin and Pete about territory and Calvin” Calvin jerks to raise his hand but stops himself “Calvin was just about to tell me what they found outside of the territory.” Pete hears a set of tires pulling up in their drive way, sloshing in the mud. The car catches Pete’s eye as he knows it is the one from the old abandon house, “uh…. Calvin.” He says but gets no response as he continues to watch as the drivers side door swings open, watching as this time he can see who the other vampire was “un……Calvin.” he says this time with more stress on his brother’s name and worry in his voice, “Calvin!” he shouts over his fathers lecture to them, “what is it boy” his father barks at him, Pete slowly raises his arm and opens out the window; followed by his father taking a peak beyond the blacked out curtain “Vampires” he says grunting under his breath.
A three-tap knock comes to the first door; the room falls silent.
